PNW Bourbons


              This amazing bourbon exploration has broadened not only my pallet and knowledge but has also brought me to some of the most amazing places in the Pacific Northwest and beyond! I have to say that the location does have an affect on the way the bourbon taste! The sights, sounds and smells build the whole experience and after all that is why we are drinking bourbon!

               Imagine if you will, sitting on a porch in Bend Oregon looking out over the river watching the sun set sipping on a nice pour of Burnside Bourbon. Or relaxing in a cozy pub in Bellingham Washington on a stormy afternoon with a pour of Chuckanut Bay Bourbon on the rocks, listening to the crackle of the fire watching the waves crash. These are just a few of our adventures this past year. All of this adds to the whole ambiance and definitely has an impact on our opinion of a bourbon. Is it a great bourbon or was just a mediocre bourbon but amazing atmosphere?

               You can go to just about any bourbon page on the internet and find out just about everything there is to know about almost every bourbon that comes out of Kentucky. This isn’t bad it’s just a statement. But what about here locally? Did you know that there are well over two dozen small batch distilleries around the northwest bottling some of the best most unique juice around! Over the next couple of blogs, I really want to dive in a little deeper into local stuff. Don’t worry we will still talk about Wheller, Blantons and Four Roses and all the great stuff that comes with those but let’s see what Chambers Bay, Old Soldiers, Oola, Oregon Spirits and Batch 206 Distilleries are offering. Why we wait for those pour yourself a glass and enjoy!

Well 80's "Olympias Best Mustache Contest" 2018

My kids are offended with my mustache! They get irritated with random people chatting me up over my ‘stache in the grocery store, picking them up from school, or even walking around downtown Olympia. One of the things they are always saying is why do people keep asking you if you compete? I never really thought about competing, my ‘stache was requested by my fiancé and also I had no idea about how competing works. Luckily for me a local spot, Well 80 , in Olympia decided to put on “Olympias Best Mustache Contest”, November 30, 2018.                I decided to enter! I take meticulous care of my moustache, it was looking pretty great that night. Upon arriving about an hour and half before the competition and the spot was packed. Hash on the Westside

In addition to good bourbon, I love a great breakfast spot! Unfortunately, there are few real breakfast joints in town. Luckily for us a new spot opened in West Olympia called Hash . Hash opened up over the summer and has been packed ever since! The menu is simple and has something for everyone, including kids, and offers several vegan plates. We went in for Sunday breakfast around 10:30 am and the restaurant was packed with many names on the waiting list. We sat outside and enjoyed the summer sun until our table was ready. The staff were polite and quick. Once seated we got our drinks and looked over the menu. The smells and atmosphere was chill. As we pondered over what to order a huge piece of cornbread delivered to our table! It was interesting, almost like a cornbread cake with strawberry whipped butter.
